Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has unveiled two of its most advanced projects — AI-powered surveillance cameras inside taxis and a unified traffic signal control system.
The announcement was made during SRTA’s participation at the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Exhibition and Conference (GRTIEC), where the Authority showcased a suite of projects designed to enhance safety, sustainability, and commuter experience.
SRTA also showcased, the first of its kind project in the UAE, Priority Traffic Device project for emergency vehicles such as ambulances, civil defence, and police. The project allows emergency vehicles to change the signal to green up to 750 metres before reaching the intersection, ensuring rapid vehicle arrival and enhancing traffic safety for all road users. It also reduces response time and prevents vehicle breakdowns during congestion.
Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, said the initiatives align with Sharjah’s vision to transform public transport through technology, artificial intelligence, and sustainability-focused solutions.

Taxis equipped with five smart cameras
Every taxi in the emirate has now been fitted with five AI-powered cameras. Three cameras cover the cockpit and passenger areas, while two external units monitor the front and rear of the vehicle. The system is designed to enhance passenger safety, support traffic investigations, and improve monitoring efficiency across the fleet.
The Authority also highlighted its Traffic Control Room project, which links all traffic signals in the emirate to a single hub. This allows real-time monitoring of traffic flow and congestion, with AI-enabled adjustments to signal timings to improve vehicle movement. Dubbed the “Green Passage” system, the project aims to reduce bottlenecks and improve overall road efficiency.
Smart bus stops and emergency vehicle priority
SRTA has also installed electronic screens at bus stops to display live bus arrival times, enhancing passenger convenience. To improve public transport services, SRTA is rolling out a new Intercity Bus Fleet Management and Ticketing System. The platform integrates GPS bus tracking, electronic ticketing, and driver monitoring, providing real-time data on routes, passenger volumes, and road safety compliance.
Al Othmani said all the showcased projects are part of SRTA’s strategy to future-proof Sharjah’s transport network and deliver services that meet the needs of residents, visitors, and businesses while supporting environmental sustainability goals. – with inputs by WAM
